During pregnancy , it is common for facial skin to experience visible changes such as increased sensitivity, the appearance of spots, or dehydration.
Adapting your facial routine with appropriate and safe products is key to keeping your skin balanced and cared for during this stage.
At Nasei, we're sharing a quick guide with everything you need to take care of your face while pregnant.
From your new facial routine to the products that work best.
Tips for caring for your face during pregnancy
Pregnancy is a time of change in every way. From the first months of pregnancy, you may notice more sensitive skin, increased sebum production, or even new melasma—dark pigmented spots—that you didn't have before.
Looking in the mirror and seeing all this may not be to your liking or even frustrating, but don't worry, because in many cases these stains can be avoided and mitigated.
A good skincare routine is necessary to enjoy a healthy, nourished face with the proper pH .
To take care of yourself, you need to adapt your products and facial routine to this new stage of your life.

The new daily skincare routine during pregnancy
The truth is, your skincare routine while pregnant consists of following the same steps as always ; you don't need to change anything! Of course, you'll need to be more careful with the sun and the ingredients in the cosmetics you use (we'll discuss this later).
The steps to follow are as follows, in this order:
-
Start by performing a gentle, skin-friendly cleansing.
-
Always use a soothing toner after cleansing to rebalance the pH of the hydrolipidic film.
-
Use your favorite oil-based serum to nourish your skin.
-
Apply a moisturizer.
-
Finish with sun protection with a physical filter such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (essential to prevent stains), although it is preferable to avoid the central hours of the day and always wear a cap.

Your facial routine doesn't change, but you might need to modify some ingredients or products and be more careful, especially with the sun.
It is very important to prevent skin blemishes.
“The secret is to achieve a regulated pH and a balance between hydration and nutrition.”
What changes occur in the skin during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, you may notice all kinds of changes in your skin. However, it's true that not all women are affected in the same way.
These are some of the most frequent manifestations:
Hyperpigmentation or melasma
One of the main concerns is the appearance of dark spots on the skin, specifically on the face.
These spots usually appear on the forehead, cheeks, and upper lip. It's a phenomenon known as the "mask of pregnancy" and is related to increased hormones like estrogen and sun exposure.
These stains can often be prevented or minimized by following these recommendations:
-
Avoid sun exposure during the central hours of the day (12:00 to 17:00).
-
Try to stay in the shade during very hot hours.
-
Wear a hat that sufficiently protects your face to prevent direct sunlight.
-
Always use sunscreen, even on cloudy days. We prefer physical sunscreens like zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, which are also accompanied by protective plant oils like karanja, carrot, sesame, and shea butter, among others.
Changes in skin pH
During pregnancy, skin pH can vary, altering the microbiome of the epidermis and causing acne breakouts or dryness .
If you're already prone to breakouts or familiar with the feeling of "dry" skin, it's important to try to keep your pH balanced.

Changes in texture or sebum production
Hormonal changes can increase sebum production, leading to the appearance of pimples or enlarged pores in the T-zone: forehead, chin and nose .
The truth is that it is very common among pregnant women and completely normal.
Furthermore, the same thing often happens on the scalp as well.
You may notice that your hair becomes softer and shinier during pregnancy. This is because it is naturally lubricated by the natural secretion of more sebum from the hair follicles.
Increased sensitivity of the skin and to odors (hyperosmia)
During pregnancy, you may notice that your sense of smell is more sensitive than ever. Not only that, but your skin may also become more sensitive, even reacting to certain elements.
The reality is that there are certain compounds, known as endocrine disruptors , that can interfere with the body's hormonal balance. Be very careful with them.
“During pregnancy, it is advisable to avoid compounds such as endocrine disruptors, which could alter hormonal balance.”
These compounds—endocrine disruptors—are often found in synthetic fragrances, preservatives such as parabens , or certain chemical sunscreens (such as oxybenzone or octocrylene).
As a precaution, many natural cosmetics or clean beauty brands exclude them from their formulas.
To avoid them, we recommend always choosing cosmetics with 100% natural botanical scents and rejecting synthetic products, which are full of petrochemical compounds, many of which are endocrine disruptors.
Choosing products without these compounds is a form of preventative care during pregnancy .
Always opt for clean formulas that are more respectful of your skin and body.

What ingredients are recommended during pregnancy?
There are ingredients that are completely safe (and positive) for pregnancy, due to their soothing, nourishing, or antioxidant properties . Here are some of our favorites that we recommend during pregnancy:
-
Soothing ingredients such as thyme, lavandin, calendula, and arnica . These are found in our Soothing Thyme and Lavender Serum . It's suitable for sensitive and reactive skin, capable of reducing inflammation and regenerating the skin. Ideal for pregnant women.

-
Antioxidants such as vitamin E, one of nature's most effective antioxidants for the care and regeneration of the epidermis . It is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning it requires fat to dissolve. It is found in cold-pressed vegetable oils. Some contain more of this vitamin than others, with sunflower, wheat germ, olive, almond, safflower, and rosehip being the richest.
For this reason, we always combine these oils in our formulas to strengthen them and create synergies with each other.
Our oily serums contain this selection combined with others whose properties together create a perfect cocktail for the skin.
You can use the nutritive , the antioxidant and the soothing , the latter being the most recommended during pregnancy due to its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Nourishing ingredients like non-comedogenic plant oils like almond and apricot . These ingredients are present in our Geranium, Lavender, and Rose Hydrating Face Cream . We call it THE CREAM because it's organic, has an incredible scent, and keeps skin hydrated, soft, and healthy all day long. It's perfect for facial care during pregnancy. Don't forget to include it in your daily routine.

Question! Is it safe to use essential oils during pregnancy?
Many expectant mothers ask this question, and although there may be fear about using essential oils during pregnancy, our facial formulas contain them in very low concentrations.
You can use them safely.
You'll also find the list of allergens on the label, in the INCI section where the ingredients appear in order from highest to lowest.
Allergens from essential oils are marked with **. You've probably heard the words "Linalool," "Geraniol," "Farnesol," etc.
What ingredients should you avoid during pregnancy?
There are ingredients that we do recommend avoiding, such as the following:
-
Retinoids: retinol (a vitamin A derivative) and retinaldehyde, among others. These ingredients can cause reactions because the skin barrier in the epidermis can become thinner or more fragile, with a reduced ability to retain water and defend itself. Retinol, which is already exfoliating and irritating in normal skin, can cause redness, itching, flaking, or a burning sensation in this more vulnerable skin.
-
Exfoliating acids in high concentrations : AHA or BHA: glycolic or salicylic acid. These are photosensitizing ingredients, and special care must be taken in the sun during this stage.
-
Some essential oils in high doses or without professional supervision: clary sage, cinnamon, clove, among others.
Remember to always check the labels on the cosmetics you buy to properly care for your skin. No worries.
